Orphanage & Childcare Project

Children are every community’s hope for a better future. Caring for at-risk infants and children who are abandoned or otherwise, resource limited can have a lasting impact on a child’s well-being and is one of SAF’s most rewarding placements available for volunteers. Prepare kids for a bright future by playing games, serving meals, and giving much-needed one-on-one attention and love. The care placement is ideal for volunteers interested in working with children, caring for their needs and welfare.

During school terms, the majority of children at the our Centre attend school during the day and with that in mind, we combine teaching and care wherein volunteers can work at the school in the morning, then offer care and needed support, mentor or play games with the children at the Centre in the afternoon. This will make a greater impact on each child’s life by teaching them at school and giving them your individual attention, love and care in and outside of the classroom. You should come prepared with ideas for activities suitable for children of different ages – think of your favorite playground games, nursery rhymes, stories, arts and crafts sessions!

The volunteer care work in Uganda is an ideal way to get involved and help improve the welfare of vulnerable children. You can contribute toward this important development work during a gap year or career break, or as a meaningful way to spend your vacation. Whether you have a background in childcare, social work or simply enjoy caring for children, a smile or a hug can make a real impact in the life to a child with an aching heart. Working with children can be fun and a rewarding experience that anyone interested in children’s issues can join. The only quality required of a volunteer is to have compassion, patience and desire to work with children.

Agriculture & Farming Project

Agriculture is the primary economic activity of most people living in rural villages in Uganda, yet many communities are unable to produce enough food. SAF and its volunteers contribute sustainable solutions to communities agricultural issues and help preserve natural resources. SAF works with volunteers to increase agricultural productivity through improved seeds and farming practices, improve access to markets so farmers can profitably sell their surplus food while integrating projects that often combine vegetable gardening, livestock management and nutrition education.

Volunteers on the project will have a lot of freedom to pursue their passion within the field, whether its genetics and breeding, agroforestry and conservation, or even fair trade practices. Agriculture volunteering can also be an excellent source of physical activity and outdoor adventure  for international volunteers, not to mention the satisfaction they’ll gain giving back to the community and helping locals take control of their own survival and sustainability.

The Agriculture Program is especially suitable for those interested in agriculture and food security, environmental science, natural resources, ecology, international development and public health. The specific tasks volunteers carry out depend on  the project, the time of year and most importantly, the needs of the individuals SAF serves.

Volunteers on the project do hands-on work that leaves a lasting impact on farming communities in need. By assisting throughout the numerous steps of the agricultural process, volunteers are able to be immersed in the local agriculture scene, learn about sustainable farming methods and agriculture processes at the rural level.

No prior experience is required, so volunteers from all backgrounds are welcome to participate in this program. You must simply have a desire to give something back to the community, and a willingness to work hard and get your hands dirty! The program is available year-round and volunteers can start from one week to three months, and may require between four and six hours of work per day. Microfinance Volunteer Project

The innovation of microfinance has allowed low income individuals, usually excluded from the traditional banking system, to obtain micro-loans to develop micro-enterprises and build savings. The aim of SAF’s microfinance project is to provide local individuals, groups and communities with the proper skills training and micro-loans to grow their businesses, create new jobs and help break the cycle of poverty and hunger. As a volunteer on the project, you will work alongside the local SAF staff to develop small business ideas, basic bookkeeping skills and conduct weekly workshops on topics related to micro-credit, computer literacy and vocation skills training.

Volunteers will also help with a wide variety of tasks which could include reading through business plans, developing marketing strategies, small loan management accounts and checking on the eligibility of members seeking micro- loans. Most of the people you will be working with are hard-working but poor families and individuals, especially women, who have already started small businesses but need general business guidance and financial support to grow their business. SAF staff along with volunteers provide all the beneficiaries with business skill training before they receive their first small loan payment. As you familiarize yourself with the basic needs of the local people you can also help them capitalize on small scale entrepreneurship through basic computer literacy training.
As a volunteer, you will spend time in a completely new environment, learning about a different culture and way of life while helping to fight poverty. It will be a rewarding as well as challenging experience. The project runs year round so you can volunteer at any time. While volunteering on the project and working alongside the SAF staff and locals, you will gain fluency in the local Ugandan language “Luganda” that is widely spoken in the communities where you will be working.
Through the microfinance project with support of volunteers and donors, SAF works to empower individuals to start their own businesses, learn savings habits, and improve their farming, which enables them to create better lives for themselves and their families.

Volunteers applying must have interest, experience or education in business administration, management, or marketing, accounting, finance and a strong interest in development work to join this project. Sports Coaching Volunteer Project

The sports coaching project is a great way to use sports as a tool for helping the development of children from underprivileged villages in Uganda.
As a sports coaching volunteer, you will work in a rural village in the Central region of Uganda on children sports project, provide soccer and physical education training for the children and youth who would not normally get the chance to play sports.Your presence alone will bring more children out to take part in the activities.

Sports helps fight depression, aids with better concentration, teaches the fundamentals of teamwork, respect for rules and can be a great boost to individual confidence. Since this project is mainly in the afternoons,it is best combined with another project like Teaching.   Volunteers will organize after school sports sessions for children and the local community on the village sports pitch.

Teaching sports has a wide range of benefits that will improve the health, fitness and well-being of the children. You become a positive role model to these children and youth through coaching sports to help encourage teamwork and team spirit, improve concentration and increase their confidence.
Along with the sporting activities, volunteers will organize social discussion weekly on various topics like child labor, literacy, malaria, personal hygiene, STDs, peer pressure and teen pregnancy.

This is an amazing opportunity for volunteers who would like to share their love of sport through coaching sessions, teaching your sports skills to the children while immersing yourself into rural tropical Ugandan life.

The project needs volunteers with skills in physical education, coaching, leadership, and discipline and would welcome any volunteer with youth counseling experience. You can combine sports with weekly sessions to discuss social issues relative to the needs of the children. Join our community sports coaching program, share your skills and contribute to a new future for underprivileged children.

Health and Medical Care

Over 60% of children in rural villages in Uganda under age 5 suffer from mostly preventable causes, such as diarrhea, malaria, and pneumonia. When these children get sick, their parents don’t have many ways to help them get better. Most families who lives in villages without doctors or clinics, or doesn’t have the money (or insurance) to visit one can’t afford simple life-saving things like de-worming drugs, vitamins and supplements, without them children die. The medical volunteers may work within the community or  are placed at healthcare center that has over 100 beds, where they can choose from wide variety of working departments; such as Radiology, Dental, Pediatric, Surgery, Maternity, OPD and other departments.
These healthcare clinics and hospitals often face qualified staff crunch and thus medical students a practitioners on their gap year can join this project to provide a resourceful support.
